About Our Classes

Beginners

Everyone is welcome at our beginners classes, whether you are a complete beginner or have experience in other forms of yoga.  If you have not practiced for some time, they make an ideal refresher.

You will receive a thorough introduction to the foundations of Ashtanga Yoga, building strength, flexibility and focus by connecting breath and movement in a sequence of postures (asanas) from the Primary Series. For optimum results, we recommend taking 2 classes per week.

Led Practice

In these classes, the teacher will verbally guide you through the primary series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Covering a partial or modified series, led classes are especially suitable if you have attended beginners' classes for some time, or are established in another vigorous yoga method. These classes move quickly, so familiarity with the sequencing and a good level of fitness is recommended. Please contact us if you are unsure if this class is suitable for you.

Mysore

The traditional method still used in Mysore today . You will be practicing at your own pace under the guidance of one or more teachers. Memory of at least the sequence comprising sun salutations and standing poses is helpful.  You will be introduced to new postures as your practice deepens.

Individual, hands-on attention is offered, and you can request as much (or as little) help as you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Ashtanga different from other kinds of yoga?

Ashtanga is a form of yoga than synchronises flowing movement with the breath (vinyasa), using a set sequence of postures (asanas) which you will eventually know by heart.

Which level should I choose?

Even if you have done yoga before, we recommend enrolling for a beginners class, so you can become familiar with the sequence of postures. At the end of your first class, you can decide with your teacher which level is best for you.

Can I come and try a class?

Yes, certainly, but we do ask you to book in advance. A drop-in class costs $25 or check the home page for any intro offers.

What is the difference between a led class and a Mysore session?

In a led class, the teacher will provide a verbal lead to guide all students, in unison, through a partial (three-quarter) or full series.  In a Mysore session, you work at your own pace through the postures you have learned, with instruction from a teacher as and when you need it.

Is a Mysore class really three hours long?

No! The teacher is present in the studio for three hours.  During that period, students will arrive at different times, do their practice, and leave. Beginners may stay only 45 minutes, while a more experienced student might stay almost two hours - it's up to you. The teacher(s) move around the studio, offering help and support to each student according to his or her need.   It is like having a one-on-one lesson in a group setting. That is why our timetable shows an "arrival window" instead of a class time.

Which one is better, led classes or Mysore?

Both are useful for different purposes. Regular attendance at a led class reminds you of the correct pace and rhythm of the sequence, but there will be little or no correction from your teacher. Mysore sessions enable you to progress at your own pace and receive personal attention from an instructor to fine-tune your practice and learn new postures.

Do you offer private classes?

We offer private classes in-studio, in-home and online over Zoom with many of our highly experienced teachers. Private Ashtanga Yoga classes provide you with higher levels of guidance and attention that can't be offered in normal group classes. Whether you want an ongoing class, or an intensive set of classes, let us know to learn more and to get started.
